Second Life is Now Relevant Again Because of the Bombshell Facebook Announcement about Purchasing Oculus VR

Second Life in Oculus Rift

The announcement yesterday that Facebook would be purchasing Oculus VR, developers of consumer-ready 3D headsets for Virtual Reality applications including Second Life is a bombshell. Reverberations are just beginning to be felt throughout the industry.

To quote Mark Zuckerberg:

Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow. Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.

Why is this important for Linden Lab and Second Life residents?  Second Life remains the world's first, and most widely used consumer application of Virtual Reality Technology-- the virtual world of Second Life. Second, Second Life has been mentioned more in the press (positively and negatively) in the past day then have in the past year, since our virtual world is the pioneering VR platform. All of of a sudden we are relevant again, and not a bunch of weirdos using an overhyped (when launched)  10 year old game platform - which is how the world has viewed us until the announcement yesterday.

Another important announcement made today -Phil Rosedale has just raised another 2.5 million, doubling his initial cap for his virtual world start-up High Fidelity. . Does this have anything to do with the Facebook purchasing Ocular VR announcement?  You betcha! High Fidelity is planning to launch on the headsets. Is this good for Second Life?  It sure is! Linden Lab should be able to raise some serious funds right now IF they stop treating Second Life as something more than a cash cow for the rest of their business. Somehow, "Blocks" , a low end Linden Lab gaming application, seems much less relevant today.

I will be writing more about this announcement, and how it may impact Second Life later, but for now, please see these links on the acquisition":
