This is an absolutely huge announcement for Virtual Worlds including Second Life. Wow. Facebook is acquiring Oculus Rift for two billion, and Phil Rosedale's High Fidelity, which is using this new technology, will be of major interest to institutional investors. Oculus VR is testing Oculus Rift headsets, now available for developers, that when will be released to the market in late 2014 will allow users to interest with Virtual Reality in three dimensions -- great realism. Linden Lab has a viewer that can be used by this new technology. This announcement is also big for the gaming industry -- but the fact that Facebook is now involved is huge news.
Linden Lab needs to move quickly into media awareness by promoting the fact that Second Life has a viewer that can be used now for the headsets, and is ready for mass-market usage later this year. I also would not be surprised to see Facebook make a play for acquiring High Fidelity outright,. Any growth in the Virtual World category will be good for Linden Lab and Second Life's future as a growth platform.
