|The New Geo Group Stadium- Go Jailbirds!|
Although people outside the United States probably find it tacky as hell, many American college and professional sport stadiums are named after private companies. Since there is little government funding available these days for such ventures, corporate money buys naming rights for these stadiums as an advertising and a "goodwill gesture".
Comcast Stadium at the University of Maryland
Minute Maid Park in Houston
Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans
and so on.
Florida Atlantic University, which is not far from where I live in South Florida, is naming their new $70 million dollar football stadium Geo Group stadium in exchange for a $6 million dollar donation payable over 10 years .The Geo Group runs Florida prisons for profit on a private basis.
My guess is instead of calling the college sports teams "The FAU Owls". perhaps the Jailbirds will be the new name of the team.
This story is so bizarre, it is actually believable. How low and tacky can a university get when groveling for money? Who wants to be reminded of jail time when attending a sporting event?
