Memorial Service Announcement for Ash Underwood, Saturday, May 1 at 3:00 PM

From Chade Dagger:

We invite you to join us celebrating the life of our brother, Ash Underwood

3.00 PM
Saturday, 1 May 2010
St Magnus Kirk, Orkney Hinterland

During the service you are welcome to share remembrances of Ash.

If you wish to place a candle or other token of respect, a place has been made available in the kirk.  Just rez it on the dais under the photo of Ash.

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.

Happy Queens Day - or Koninginnedag. It is the biggest day of the year in The Netherlands

Happy Queens Day (Koninginnedag, or the Queen's birthday), the biggest day of the year in the Netherlands.  This is the day the Dutch celebrate being Dutch and generally party at all hours in great excess.  It is also one of the great gay events all year; the clubs are open at all hours including the night before, and everyone parties their tail off.

Imagine Mardi Gras and whatever your national holiday is rolled into one huge wild celebration.  The last time I was at a Queen's Day celebration was 2003 in Amsterdam.  Let me describe it to you.

You have partied the night before; everyone is extremely friendly for this holiday, which is saying something because they are friendly anyway.  You wake up the next morning to gorgeous Church Bells pealing, and walk outside.  Everyone is selling their stuff on the streets; the entire city of Amsterdam is one big yard sale. This is the one day a year they can sell without a permit.

I am not making this one up -- outside of my house, there were children selling joints that were placed out on a card table.  As I walk by, the children yelled out Hey Mr. do you want to buy a joint (I didn't). It seems that the police did confiscate over 500 joints from them that day, the children had a nice business going, but such sales need to be done in licensed coffee shops by adults. Only in Amsterdam could this happen. A friend of mine asked if they had a sign up that said JOINTZ with the Z backwards - it would have been cute in a snoopy way.

Parades, especially in the canals take over around noontime, and at  around 2 PM the partying begins and lasts until the wee hours. It really is quite an experience. I actually had my face painted Orange (the Dutch Royal Family is the House of Orange), with Dutch flags on my cheeks, so people thought I was a native.

Queens Day is actually the birthday of the beloved former Queen or the Netherlands, Queen Juliana, who died in 2004.  The current Queen, Queen Beatrix, who may be abdicating soon in favor of her son, Willem (who will be the first King of Holland since 1890 if he succeeds his mother) celebrates hers in August, but the end of April is such a nice time of year, they decided not to move the day.

I made a Youtube video of another former Dutch Queen, perhaps the most famous Dutch person of the past 100 years- Queen Wilhemina. She is the current Queen's grandmother, and reigned from 1890- 1948.  What is amazing about her is the amount of sheer grit and determine she showed in 1940, when at the age of 60, she escaped to London with just the clothes she had on her at the time and led a government in exile when the Nazis took over her country in World War 2.  When her Prime Minister decided to collaborate with the Germans she fired him-- and appointed her own.  She was very regal and very down to earth at the same time. My Dutch friends tell me that there is some sort of saying about her in Holland involving her as a potential mother-in-law but I do not know what it is.

The video is set to the oldest national anthem in the world, Het Wilhelmus, which people in Holland only to play at International Soccer Games from what I understand.

Blue Mars Photo of the Day: Welcome Area at New Venice

Since Blue Mars can only be photographed screenscraping, I spent a great deal of time to get this view of the welcome area at New Venice.  The rich detaining and atmospherics of this new virtual world can be seen in the image above.  The post processing was minor, involving a small bit of color correction.

Second Life Photo of the Day - Tadd and Johny Mediating

I took these photos of club owners Johny Alderton (above) and Tadd Rives meditating outside of their club, Tadd's on Damiax's Thor's sculpture. I tried to make it look like that were sitting on one if the statues laps.  I think these photos look cool.

Villa Capra (La Rotonda) is a virtual interpretation of the World Heritage site in Vicenza, Italy. Built in 1565, this elegant country house was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome and has since influenced the design of thousands of subsequent structures. You can visit this gorgeous destination, which really is one of the nicest architecutural rendtions on the grid here: SLURL:

Photography was done in the Bristol light setting in the emerald viewer, and then sharpened with color increased about 10%.

Friday Afternoon at Tainted Boys

Adonis and Trace's popular Tainted Boys club was packed on Friday.   Two Events were celebrated. First, it was uber-neko Franzizkus Ninetails' real life birthday.  Second it was St. Georges Day, the national holiday of England, and English D.J. Kadie made sure all fellow Brits (including myself) were waving the flag of England with the red cross of St. George. Tainted Boys is always fun, crowded, and trippy and has European hours; perfect for Americans and Canadians who are free in the afternoons.

Second Life Photo of the Day - Sterling Vineyards.

I found the Sterling Vineyard sim in a search for waterfalls for sale, and they do have nice ones for sale along with plants and other cool outdoor things at Natural Fantasies.  But what impressed me was the lighting and color of the place; it was staged excellently with great attention paid to color and location lighting effects.  Imagine a psychedelic forest in the Wizard of Oz where Dorothy and her friends accidentally eat magic mushrooms.

Sterling Vineyards is actually one of my favorite wineries in Northern California, and they do have have one here too; it appears to be a setting for outdoor music. It is next to Natural Fantasies.  I will post the SLURL here next time I am in.

Blue Mars Photo of the Day: Gridrock City

I took these photos of Gridrock City in Blue Mars and experimented with some color effects to get the shades here. I used sharpening to get the illustration effect which builds up edges, and color saturation to bring the color out.

St Albans Cathedral Choir- Real Life Concert

The choir from St. Albans Cathedral in England is stranded in south Florida due to the dust storm from the Iceland volcano, and did a pick up concert near where I live last night.  It was amazing.  I hope they are able to get home!

Ash Underwood In Memorium We Will Miss You

Ash Underwood passed away this Wednesday.   Ash has been fighting a brain tumor which finally get the better of him. Ash was a super fun guy; he used to contact me when he logged on from his native  New Zealand with some funny story or joke and crack me up all the time. Ash was just a super nice person, and I will miss him terribly, as will many other people in Second Life.

I never posted on Kris Mournier. who died recently and was suffering from the effects of cancer for many years. Kris was very active in the Gay Pride and gave 100% of himself when he could. He will be very missed by many, including his close friend Boots Mission, who my heart goes out to.

These great guys were all my friends and join Jaren Blackheart and Ars Norsmead as real loses for our community this year. However, and this is probably me writing to myself more than anything, we must not let ourselves be indulgent in grief and depression, but pick ourselves up after a decent interval of time and support our friends and Second Life community. They would expect nothing less.

Blue Mars Springs to Life at Surf City

The new gorgeous virtual world of Avatar Reality's  Blue Mars is springing to life this week.  First, the announcement over at New World Notes yesterday that Blue Mars would be offering a cloud option later this year is huge.  I will be posting on this shortly. Second, for the first time for me at least, I saw a large crowd of real people here- at a meeting at the new Bowling Alley in Surf City.  You remember that one of my observations was that there were few users online.

Here are some photos of today's gathering in Surf City A fun bowling game exists that I will try out later.  Glenn Goodlife (Glenn Saunders, the Community Director) was there to answer questions and discuss future plans. I think Blue Mars should be booming in a bit once some current "big event killer apps" that have been rumored to fruition.  All it would take is one rich and content rich application (such as the Smithsonian project that I have seen mentioned) with big name recognition to drive attendance figures way up.  My guess is that Blue Mars has something up their sleeves; it is not easy to raise $13.5 million of venture capital money in today's economy as Avatr Reality has done in a short period of time. Second Life and Blue Mars are very different animals, and their is room for both of course.  But as things stand now, I would put my bet on Avatar Reality growing as a very rapid pace in 2010,

Here is the link to the Blue Mars page on Facebook.

Glenn Goodlife (Glenn Saunders, the Community Director) has big plans in place for the future growth of Blue Mars.
