20 Years Ago Today: Loma Prieta Earthquake

The Loma Prieta earthquake, also known as the Quake of '89 and the World Series Quake, struck the San Francisco Bay Area on October 17, 1989 at 5:04 p.m. local time.

Many people reading this blog lived through that quake. It lasted 15 seconds and measured 6.9. on quake killed 63 people throughout northern California, injured 3,757 people and left some 8,000 to 12,000 people homeless.

Many more would have died if it were not for the bizarre coincidence that the World Series game had just started- featuing the two teams in the San Francisco bay area! The San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics. The freeways, including the one that collapsed in Oakland, were relatively empty - and they should have been packed because it was rush hour.

So for all of you who lived through this, here it is once again. Live film footage showing how frightening this terrible earthquake was.
