Photo of the Day: Black and White or Sepia?
When going a monotone portrait, interesting effects can be generated when bringing out mid range colours, converting them to filtered black and white (I used a deep red filter which works well with skin tones), and then altering the contract levels.
You do not need Photoshop to do this. The free Google program Picasa does a fine job with this. As I've said in prior how-to's I like Picasa since it is such a huge time saver by allowing you to post your photography directly online in albums that you can make public or share with people.
I love both the sepia - type tone and the black and white effects, although after looking at both, I feel the black and white conveys a better sense of the subject matter by not providing a nuance a tone.
