Who Are The Ten Most Powerful Elected LGBT Politicians in the World Today? Eddi's List for January 2014

Elio Di Rupo, The Prime Minister of Belgium
The Most Powerful LGBT Elected Politician In the World Today

On August 3, 2013, I published my rankings of the 10 most powerful LGBT-elected politicians in the world

My rankings were subjective. In order for a politician to be on the list I applied the following criteria:

1. A candidate must be out, and freely publicize their LGBT status to be included on the list. "Rumored" LGBT politicians were not included.

2. Only current elected office holders were included. This leaves out many appointed judges, agency heads, and other individuals such as Lord Alli of the U.K. who was appointed, and not elected to his current office.
Former powerful LGBT politicians, such as U.S. Congressman Barney Frank are not included on the current list.

3. Power is taken into account. A leader of the opposition, for example, has less power than an actual leader of a government or chamber.

4. Heads of State (Prime Minister, President) or Regional Premiers are emphasized. Also, size and power of the measured nation or region are taken into effect.
______________________________

Since August 3, there have been many changes. Two people on the August list no longer hold elective office, and there are two additions.

My current rankings are as follows:

1. Elio Di Rupo, Prime Minister, Belgium

2. Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, Canada

3 . Klaus Wowereit, Governing Mayor of Berlin and Vice Chairman of the SDP Party, Former President of the Bundesrat, Germany

4. Bertrand Delanoë, Mayor of Paris, France

5. Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister, Luxembourg (Note: New to list. Would rank higher as a head of government but Luxembourg, although very wealthy and a full NATO member, only has 533,000 population).

6.  Nichi Vendola, President of Apulia Region, Italy.  Leader of the Italian Left Ecology Freedom Party.

7. Tammy Baldwin, Senator from Wisconsin, United States (she rises on the list as one of several emerging leaders of the progressive (left) wing of the Democratic Party.

8. Penny Wong, Leader of the Government in the Senate, Australia (Penny would be higher if her Labour party had not lost the Australian election)

9. Rosario Crocetta, President of Sicily Region, Italy

10. Angela Eagle, Member of the UK Parliament, United Kingdom. (Note: New to list. Shadow Leader of the House of Commons for the Opposition Labour Party).
