Celebrate New York Week: The Cotton Club, and Virtual Harlem

The Cotton Club in Virtual Harlem in Second Life

Harlem is a large neighborhood within the northern section of the Island of Manhattan. For the past 90 years has been the best known African-American cultural center in the United States. Second Life’s virtual Harlem includes replicas of two famous Harlem institutions, the Apollo Theater, which still stands today, and the legendary Cotton Club, which operated from 1923 to 1940.

The Cotton Club restricted admission with a whites-only policy, even though it featured many of the greatest Black entertainers of all time including Lena Horne, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Bessie Smith, and Cab Calloway. The ballroom is a great place to take a romantic date, particularly if the two of you are dressed to the nines. I also found the immediate area quite evocative of north Manhattan Island.
