|City of Chicago|
The great State of Illinois, home of the City of Chicago, the third biggest city in the United States, and home of President Obama, may approve legal same sex marriage this week.
The votes are there. The Illinois State Senate and House are overwhelmingly controlled by the Democratic Party. The State Governor, Pat Quinn, is a Democrat and has promised to sign any same-sex marriage law into effect. Just today, Illinois Republican Chairman Pat Brady has endorsed same sex marriage.
The Illinois legislature goes on recess on January 8, a new legislature will be sworn in a few days later. The legislature just may pass this law into effect during its "lame duck" session in effect now.
Some conservative religious leaders, including powerful Cardinal Francis George, are doing what they can to stop same sex marriage from coming into effect in Illinois, the fifth biggest state with a population of 13 million. If passed, same-sex marriage will be legal in 9 of the 50 States and the District of Columbia, comprising 20% of the United States Population, or over 60 million people.
If you live in Illinois make sure to contact your State Assemblyman or State Senator, and urge them to pass the law this week.
