Richard Gere Turns 60 Today

Handsome actor Richard Gere turns 60 today. He was voted the sexiest man alive in 1999. Although he is primarily identified with promoting awsocial causes today such as human rights in Tibet, he was perhaps the leading romantic lead of the 1980's.

The opening of the 1980 hit American Gigilo, with Blondie singling "call me" is one of the most memorable moments in cinema. The ethos of 30 years ago that degraded female prostitution but find the redeemable male Gigolo romantic is evident in this film.

Here he is in a hot scene from 1983's Breahtless.

Jason Priestley Turns 40 Today

Canadian actor Jason Priestley, who played blond adonis Brandon Walsh on the 90's classic teen show Beverly Hills 90210, turns 40 today. He now is macho and rather handsome but I prefer him in his ubertwink days.

I always had a thing for Jason on 90210. I remember when he was "dating" West LA Princess Andrea and thinking how lucky she was.

When I read that his member was legendary for its size in Hollywood I got all excited. Skinny blond boys can be very large.

In fact, I almost took the name Jaysin Priestley when I signed up for SL (Jason was taken of course) but Eddi Haskell was more famous a name and more fun actually.

Jason's best film was Charles Busch's campy classic Die Mommy Die. Jason plays Tony Parker, a gigolo with a large member, and a former teen series television star. . You simply MUST see this film if you have not.

Charles Busch plays Angela Arden, a former star, in drag.

YouTube: Wedding of MileHigh Maximus and Giacomo Babenco

MileHigh and Giacomo got married at a really nice wedding ceremony on Sunday August 23, and I made this video for them. Once again, my medium of choice is a photomontage set to music since I can capture subtle effects more easily.

Ted Kennedy, Gay Rights Advocate, 1932-2009

Senator Edward Kennedy, younger brother of President John F. Kennedy, died today. He was the second most senior US Senator, leader of the liberal wing of the Democratic party, and ardent supporter of gay rights.

From equailitygiving.org

Equality Hero: Senator Ted Kennedy

Senator Ted Kennedy, the second most senior member of the US Senate, is an Equality Hero for his support for equal rights for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, and queers.

Senator Edward M. Kennedy views the struggle for LGBT equality as part of the ongoing battle for civil rights that has been waged in earnest over the last half century. The second most senior member of the US Senate, Kennedy's outspoken leadership in the civil rights arena has been recognized not only by the residents of Massachusetts, whom he has represented in the US Senate for some 43 years, but throughout the nation and the world.

In the 1960's, Senator Kennedy helped lead the fight to open the doors of polling booths to African-Americans throughout the south. In the 1970's, he fought to lower the iron curtain so that Soviet Jews could reclaim their freedom and heritage. In the 1980's he stood in the forefront of efforts to provide equal accommodations for Americans with disabilities.

In the 1990's Kennedy became the clear Senate leader in the fight to end discrimination against members of the LGBT community, and to fund programs for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. He was also one of the very few senators to vote against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

More recently he guided the Mathew Shepard Hate Crimes Act to passage and introduced the Senate version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

Senator Kennedy continues to be a vocal proponent of same sex marriage and recently received the Gerry Studds Visibility Award from the Fenway Community Health Center in Boston, the nation's largest LGBT-focused health facility.

A Very Romantic Video -- And Why Still Images Work

Jago and I like to explore interesting sims, and last week, he showed me an enchanted forest he found. I could rez there, and decided to rez a nice kiss animation.

Now, I am a compulsive photographer, and this video just happened. It is a collection of stills that when, in time sequence, show a story. It is not a full blown machinima effect, but does let you get much finer detail in each frame. It also seems to bring out emotions that rapid machinima do not.

I used the movie maker in Google's Picasa free web based image editor. I also use this site to store my photos, this took no time at all- all you do is make a slide and put in some music, and select some effects.

The music is Gershwin's famous Rhapsody in Blue.

Make sure to see this. I think it is one of my most romantic videos.

New Youtube from Eddi - Second Pride's Teahouse of the August Moon

On Saturday, August 22, 2009 Second Pride had a wonderful event - the Teahouse of the August Moon. This was the first fundraiser of the season. An entire sim was transformed into a wonderful replica of Japan for an entire days of events. This photomontage was taken during the afternoon floor show. I set this to music from the from Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado. The technical performance of the sim due to the high attendance numbers resulted in slow rezzing textures and lag which hindered photographic quality, but i think the end result is worthwhile.

Weekend Event Calendar from Midcourt

My Woodstock at 40 Video is being Featured on YouTube

I've done five videos for the Woodstock at 40 event last week, and I just found out that YouTube has decided to feature this one. They don't tell you this, I just discovered this looking at my insight page (below). I've done 61 videos to date, and this is the first time it has happened, so I guess its a big deal.

Here is a link to the video if you have not seen it:

On Saturday, August 22, 2009 Second Pride brings you the Teahouse of the August Moon

On Saturday, August 22, 2009 Second Pride brings you the Teahouse of the August Moon, the first fundraiser of the season leading up to the Festival next year!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Teahouse event runs from Noon to 10PM SLT, with dance, party, and theater taking place at five different venues:

• You will not want to miss the 2 floor shows, at Noon and at 5PM where a cast of 25 transform a Japanese village into a spectacular musical production. Special viewing decks allow spectators to take in the complete panorama.

• The Temple of the Golden Pavilion extends over a wonderful lake and suggests a position between heaven and earth. The inside of the temple houses many relics, and the outside gardens become inspired dance floors at 1PM and 6PM.

• The evolution of natural scenery with the addition of carefully chosen local materials defines the Teahouse and its beautiful gardens. All are welcome at the Teahouse, the friendliest of places. Parties at 2PM, 7PM, and 9PM.

• At 3PM we have a special Kabuki play entitled Musume Dojoji performed by the Ichimura-za Kabuki group. The Kabuki Theatre is located on a high plateau, overlooking the Japanese village. Get into authentic tradition with SL Kabuki!

• The evanescent world of fleeting beauty is mixed with the mysteries of water at our Floating World venue. Dance to pulsating beats across the lily pond at 3PM and 8PM.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Teahouse of the August Moon is crafted for your enjoyment, but also created to to support Amnesty International and its Project Outfront. Project Outfront works to protect members of the LGBT community while striving to achieve decriminalization and marriage equality world-wide. Your donations during the event support this worthy cause.

Share your Pride on August 22nd, and mark your calendars for a thrilling introduction to an event-laden season!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keep your ears open for the Teahouse landmark, available a few days before the party!

Apocalypse Now Premiered 30 Years Ago This Week

Apocalypse Now, a gruesome and gory movie about the Vietnam Nam war, but great cinema, opened 30 years ago this week on August 15, 1979.

Here is the most famous scene in the movie- the attack of the helicopters to Richard Wagner;s Flight of the Valkyries from the opera Die Walkure.

I am running this post early to make way for four days of coverage from Woodstock at 40, a Second Life major event.

On one extra note, I have decided that this scene, after looking at it this morning, makes me sick. What an abuse of power. All these poor Vietnamese being killed by American helicopters for no rational reason. No wonder 500,000 people assembled 40 years ago at Woodstock to not only listen to great music but to protest this scene that was going on at the same time.

Three Days to Go Before SL's Biggest Music Festival!

Woodstock 40 opens on Friday, August 14 in Second life and last for four days.

The four days will match the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, the most important music festival of all times.

Over 21 hours of music will be played. Original recordings will be played on a sim that has been built to look like the original site in New York in 1969. A live band will be on stage playing the music to give virtual replication of the original concert.

What is so interesting about this is that 296 Songs have been identified at the original four day Woodstock Festival. The founder of SL Woodstock, prominent DJ and Blue Region owner Aristippus Larsson has assembled over 165 recordings of live Woodstock performance, some of which were released this year. Another 100 songs were commercially available over the past 40 years. Aris has spent years assembling what is the most comprehensive assembly of original Woodstock music available anywhere. As far as we know, a replication event like this has never been attempted in real life, since some of the original music has just recently been released.

Playlists for each day will be given by a greeter to each person who arrives for Woodstock at 40. These will include the name of each song, where it is Live from the original Woodstock, live from other venues, or studio recording. A note will tell people songs are available as downloads from online and other sources.

Collections will be taken at the event to benefit www.breadandjams.org, a real life Homeless Shelter in the Boston, Massachusetts area.

Here are the times for the event.

August 14 Friday: 7 to 10 p.m.
August 15 Saturday: 1 to 10 p.m.
August 16 Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
August 17 Monday 7 to 10 pm

70 Years Ago Today: The Wizard of Oz!

70 years ago today, the Wizard of Oz first played at the Strand Theater in Oconomowoc, Wisconisn.

Many people, including myself, consider it the greatest film ever made. It is actually two classic films in one. The gorgeous black-and-white part filmed in the beginning is a classic slice of Americana. The color portion is unsurpassed to this day in dramatic color effects. Judy Garland's portrayal of Dorothy (as well as Margaret Hamilton's epic portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West, a part she became very sick for portraying since she had a bad reaction to the green paint used all over her and feel during a scene when she was on a platform and burned herself) remains in just about everyone's mind forever after seeing them in their roles. The Wicked Witch of the West looked exactly like Mrs.Gunther, my fourth grade teacher, but was not quite as nasty as Mrs. Gunther, the ultimate witch, was to many of her students.

The Wizard of Oz was an immediate hit, and had a more traditional opening at Graumann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood three days later.

1939 was an incredible year for classic film, according to Wikipedia. The other "greatest film of all time", Gone With The Wind, also premiered that year.

Oz's release date in the year 1939 coincided with the release of many other now classic films, according to the American Film Institute. Films that Oz competed with in 1939 were Beau Geste, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, Gunga Din, The Roaring Twenties, Union Pacific, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Babes in Arms, Wuthering Heights, and of course Gone With The Wind. 1939 holds the honor of being the year that released the most number of classic films.

An overweight teenage Judy Garland (put on a destructive drug combination of amphetamines during the day and downers at night to maintain her weight loss) almost did not get the part. Shirley Temple, the 10 year old darling of America, seemed destined for the part. This video shows how Judy was selected:

Here is a very good alternative ending version of the Wizard of Oz from MadTV - the tin man is getting ready for one hell of a hand job!

70 Years Ago Today There Was No Wizard of Oz.

Imagine a world without the Wizard of Oz.

The movie the Wizard of Oz was just a poster in front of the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, a small town Wisconsin. The movie was set to open the following day. No one is sure why this small town was chosen for the honors of showing this film. Some people think it was chosen as a test site to gauge audience reaction; others think some Hollywood executives were staying nearby on summer vacation and simply wanted to see the premier of the movie before it was released in Hollywood.

It actually sneak previewed on August 11 as a theater in Kenosha, Wisconsin but the Strand theater is where it was first officially released, and gets honors as the first place it was shown. It was also shown in test to several public audiences in Los Angeles in June, 1939.

By the way, if you live near Oconomowoc, which is between Milwaukee and Madison, head on over. They are having a free screening of the movie this week and a big celebration of the event.

Cinema would be forever changed the next day. Check back here tomorrow.

Rally in Tel Aviv To Protest Shootings at Gay Club attended by over 70,000 people last night

In Tel Aviv Israel last week 2 gay teenagers were killed, and many injured, in a gay club attended by young Israelis, many of them teens. Israel has a small but vibrant gay community, and in general, has some of the best gay rights laws in the world; gay marriage is recognized (but must be performed in another country).

Last night, In a record crowd turnout for any gay rights rally outside of the major cities of the United States and Europe, over 70,000 people turned out for a rally in support of gay rights and in protest of the killings including the President of Israel himself, noble prize winner Shimon Peres.

This was not just a Jewish rally, Palestinian gay activists (there are some) also turned out at the rally.

70,000 turnout is remarkable for a country that has 7 million people, in a city of three million.

Photo of the Day: Jago and I at the Hanging Gardens of Apollo

I took this this evening. What a perfect way to begin a weekend!

Club T-Bone

I logged on late last night (actually Friday morning) and wanted somewhere to go- and got this message from Club Thunder owner Vanyel Gazov that DJ Jonathon Beattie was playing at Tom06 Castro's T-Bone and headed over.

I have never been to T-Bone but it is really fun club! It was uniform night, so I put on my Marine Dress uniform which made me look like a Halloween trick-or-treater but who cares! Just wish I could be a bit taller at times. Here I am dancing with two month straight Just Beautiful Men contest winner Willicous who is dressed as an Italian lifeguard in a tiny speedo.

Club T-Bone is fun, and the late night party is going on now so come down if you get this in time

Happy 200th Birthday Alfred Lord Tennyson!

Who is this guy?

Well, he wrote this famous poem, The Charge of the Light Brigade!
----------------------------------
Half a league, half a league,
  Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns' he said:
Into the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldiers knew
  Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
  Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
  Rode the six hundred.

Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army while
  All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre-stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
  Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
  Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
  All the world wonder'd.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
  Noble six hundred!
